Title: Deep erosion downstream of reservoirs on the example of selected dams in the world

Abstract. On the basis of the literature the one of the most dangerous phenomenon impacting the dams was characterised. It is the process of bed erosion occurring downstream of the dam. The main elements determining intensity and progress in time and space were described. In this frame the results of research on erosion processes downstream of the Włocławek dam in the Vistula river were presented. This dam is still in danger due to local scour intense formation potentially resulting in dam-break.

Key words: dams, reservoirs, deep erosion the rate of erosion zone shifting, fluvial processes
